Michael Durgan only stopped to get cigarettes when he decided to check the Lottery ticket that he’d purchased two days before.
When he checked the ticket in the “Lucky Spot” scanner, it gave him the message to see the retailer. When the clerk behind the counter scanned it, the message advised him to contact the Lottery. That’s when the cashier offered to check his numbers and Durgan discovered it was his very lucky day.
“When she checked the numbers and found the ticket to be a winner, I started shaking and so did she,” he stated. Durgan used the easy pick to get the numbers that netted him $250,000.
Durgan, whose ticket was sold by Fenton Party Store located at 502 W. Silver Lake Rd. in Fenton, held one of nine winners in Michigan that matched the five white balls in the Mega Millions drawing of March 20.
Two other players have also claimed their prizes. Abe Jones of Taylor purchased his winning $250,000 ticket at Sam’s Yum Yum Donuts Inc. located at 8284 Telegraph Rd. in Taylor. Another prize winning ticket was claimed by William Bobbish of Canton who purchased his ticket at Smoker’s Express located at 45156 Ford Rd. in Canton.
The other six $250,000 winning Mega Millions tickets were sold at:
- Meijer store #54 located at 20401 Haggerty Rd. in Northville (5 sold)
- Eagle Express Liquor & Deli located at 9576 Highland Rd. in Howell
The owners of the remaining winning tickets must contact the Lottery’s Public Relations Division at 517-373-1237 to make an appointment to claim their prizes.
Over 95 cents of every dollar spent on Lottery tickets is returned to the state in the form of contributions to the state School Aid Fund, prizes to players and commissions to retailers. In fiscal year 2011, the contribution to schools was over $727.3 million. Since its inception in 1972, the Lottery has contributed over $16 billion to education in Michigan.
