A departure from his ordinary routine led a Kalamazoo County man to a $4 million Michigan Lottery prize.
The lucky player, who chose to remain anonymous, won $4 million playing the Lottery’s $100,000,000 Diamonds instant game. He bought his winning ticket at the Next Door Store, located at 5658 West Main Street in Kalamazoo.
“Fantasy 5 is my favorite game and that is what I normally play,” said the winner. “For some reason, when I stopped to buy my Lottery tickets, I felt like changing it up so I bought the $100,000,000 Diamonds ticket.
“I have played the game before, and like that you have a chance to win $100 instantly at the top of the ticket. When I didn’t win $100 right away, I remember thinking: ‘I’ve still got a chance at the $4 million.’”
It didn’t take the lucky player long to realize he was a big winner. The first spot on his ticket revealed a star symbol and ‘4MIL.’
The player visited Lottery headquarters Wednesday to claim his big prize. He chose to receive his prize as a one-time lump sum payment of about $2.5 million rather than an annuity.
With his winnings, the player plans to enjoy “relaxation and retirement” with his wife.
Even though he won big playing $100,000,000 Diamonds, the lucky player will keep playing Fantasy 5.
“When I got here, I stopped at the party store down the road and bought a Fantasy 5 ticket playing the five ‘lucky numbers’ that were on my $100,000,000 Diamonds ticket: 08-09-25-30-33. You never know I could win again. Stranger things have happened,” the player said.
Players have won more than $97.6 million playing $100,000,000 Diamonds, which launched in Sept. 2014. Each $30 ticket offers players a chance to win prizes ranging from $30 up to $4 million. More than $101.4 million in prizes remain, including two $4 million top prizes, 171 $4,000 prizes, and 3,776 $1,000 prizes.
Lottery instant games may be purchased at 11,000 retailers across the state.
In 2015, Lottery players won more than $722.1 million playing instant games.
