Kent County Woman Wins $1 Million Playing Michigan Lottery’s $1,000,000 Jackpot Instant Game

06.07.16 $1,000,000 IG # 723 $1,000,000 Jackpot Dawn Cooley Kent CountyIt took a Kent County woman hours to convince her family – and herself – that she had won $1 million playing the Michigan Lottery’s $1,000,000 Jackpot instant game.

Dawn Cooley, 44, scratched her winning ticket on Monday evening after having surgery in the morning. She bought the lucky ticket at the Speedway gas station, located at 3315 South Division Avenue in Grand Rapids.

“I was in total shock after I scratched the ticket off and saw a ‘$1MIL’ symbol,” said Cooley. “I had so many people tell me I was reading the ticket wrong so I had to show them so they could see it with their own eyes.”

Even after showing several family members, Cooley wasn’t convinced she was a winner.

“I still couldn’t believe it so I took my ticket back to Speedway to have the clerk scan it,” said Cooley. “When she scanned the ticket she told me ‘I can’t cash this.’

“Then she came around the counter and whispered to me that I had won $1 million.”

Cooley visited Lottery headquarters on Tuesday to claim her big prize. She chose to receive her prize as a one-time lump sum payment of $634,517 rather than an annuity.

With her winnings, Cooley plans to pay off her bills, buy her daughters new vehicles, and then invest the remainder.

Players have won nearly $30 million playing $1,000,000 Jackpot, which launched in August 2015. Each $10 ticket offers players a chance to win prizes ranging from $10 up to $1 million. Nearly $6 million in prizes remain, including one $1 million top prize, seven $10,000 prizes, and 25 $1,000 prizes.

Lottery instant games may be purchased at 11,000 retailers across the state.

In 2015, Lottery players won more than $722.1 million playing instant games.
