LANSING, July 2, 2002 – Luck was with D.A. Kource of Sterling Heights when she matched the first five numbers drawn in the June 21 Mega Millions drawing to win a $175,000 prize! The winning numbers for the June 21 drawing were: 13, 18, 32, 39, 49 and the Gold Mega Ball number was 6.
The winning "easy pick" Mega Millions ticket was purchased at Big Valley Foods, 13839 19 Mile Road, in Sterling Heights.
"My son picked up a winning number report from the store for me," Kource said. "When I compared the winning numbers to the ones on my ticket, I thought perhaps he had gotten the report for the wrong day. I double-checked the date, and then told my mom, ‘I think I have something here.’ She checked the ticket for me, and then we had my dad check it as well. I was stunned that I had matched the first five numbers!"
Kource, a faithful Michigan Lottery player for the past 29 years, said it is too soon to specify her plans for her winnings. She added that she kept the ticket in a cupboard in her home before turning it in at Lottery headquarters in Lansing.
The lucky lady offered some words of encouragement to other Lottery players. "Winning really does happen, you just have to play to win!"
The last Big Game drawing took place on Tuesday, May 14. On Wednesday, May 15, The Big Game was replaced by Mega Millions. Mega Millions is a multistate lottery game in Michigan, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Virginia. Wagers cost $1 each and tickets may be purchased at more than 7,000 Michigan Lottery retailers statewide.
