A Clare County educator known for guiding students to new and challenging ways to learn and for incorporating technology into her classroom has been honored with an Excellence in Education award from the Michigan Lottery.

The award winner, Donna Venglar, teaches fourth grade at the Clare Primary School, in Clare.  The school is part of the Clare Public Schools.

The Michigan Lottery recently established the Excellence in Education awards to recognize outstanding public school educators across the state during the school year.

Winners of the weekly award receive a plaque, a $500 cash prize, and a $500 grant to their classroom, school or school district.  One of the weekly winners will be selected as the Educator of the Year and will receive a $10,000 cash prize.

Each winner also is featured in a news segment on the Lottery’s media partner stations:  WXYZ-TV in Detroit, FOX 17 in Grand Rapids, and FOX 47 in Lansing. The news segment featuring Venglar will air Tuesday evening in Grand Rapids and Lansing and Thursday evening in Detroit.

For the Excellence in Education awards program, the Lottery has teamed up with Michigan State University basketball coach Tom Izzo.  Izzo met recently with Venglar at the Breslin Center and presented her with the award.

Venglar said her experience as a mother led her to a career in education.  “I enjoyed raising my own children so much that once they were independent enough, I went back to school so I could start a career in teaching,” she said.

She said helping students to grow academically and as individuals is her favorite part of being an educator.  “I love empowering students to be the best they can be,” she said, adding that her students motivate her to do her best every day:  “They make it all worthwhile.”

Venglar has been an educator for 12 years and has taught fourth grade in the Clare Public Schools for the past four years.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Hawaii-Manoa and a master’s degree in kindergarten-through-12th grade reading and literacy from Central Michigan University.

The Excellence in Education award nomination, submitted by a colleague, described Venglar as “an innovator and a champion for children. She cares about each and every student.  As a master teacher, Mrs. Venglar uses data to meet the learning needs of her students.  Her classroom is not just a classroom. It is an environment where fourth graders become investigators, collaborators, writers, publishers and historians! Mrs. Venglar empowers her students to learn in exciting and challenging ways.  Students have ownership of their learning goals and work as members of the classroom society to grow and progress as learners and people.”

The nomination noted that Venglar “and her students use technology embedded within all that they do as her students have a one-to-one iPad classroom.  In addition, Mrs. Venglar is a team leader with her staff at the Clare Primary School.  She designed and led the team with the Jump Start Summer Program this past summer. As a teacher in the classroom she is a master.  As an educational leader, she is respected and followed with enthusiasm.”

Excellence in Education award nominees are evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Excellence – Their work consistently helps students and/or their schools or school districts advance to higher levels of academic achievement.
  • Dedication – They consistently go above and beyond expectations to help students succeed.
  • Inspiration – Their work inspires others around them to exceed expectations either academically or professionally.
  • Leadership – They demonstrate clear leadership skills in their positions with their school or school districts
  • Effectiveness – The nominee’s work has clear and positive results on the educational advancement of students within the school or school district.

Club Keno Doubler Days Gives Players a Chance to Double Their Winnings

Club Keno Doubler DaysClub Keno players will be seeing double during the month of March. Starting Sunday, Club Keno players will have the opportunity to have their prizes doubled during the Michigan Lottery’s Doubler Days.

A “Doubler” message will be printed on random Club Keno tickets through March 31. That “Doubler” message means all Club Keno and Kicker prizes won on that ticket will be doubled. If a player purchases a ticket for multiple draws and it has a “Doubler” message, all the prizes won in all drawings on that ticket are doubled.

The Doubler Days promotion comes at no additional cost to players. Tickets must be valid Club Keno winners to be eligible for double winnings. A “Doubler” message alone does not denote a win. The Jack prizes are not eligible for the Doubler Days promotion. Prizes will be doubled up to a limit of $4 million per drawing.

One of the Lottery’s most popular games, Club Keno gives players 37 different ways to play and win. Players select up to 10 numbers to match from one to 80, with prize amounts determined based on the amount the player wagered. Club Keno may be played at Lottery retailers across the state. Drawings are every three and a half minutes. Results and live drawings may be found online at http://www.michiganlottery.com.

Allegan County Woman Becomes First $1 Million Winner Playing Michigan Lottery Games Online

Pam Rawson made Michigan Lottery history becoming the first online game $1 million winner.

Pam Rawson made Michigan Lottery history becoming the first online game $1 million winner.

An Allegan County woman became the first $1 million winner playing the Michigan Lottery’s online games.

Pam Rawson, of Grand Junction, made history while playing Diamond Payout online on Feb. 18. She visited Lottery headquarters this week to collect her prize.

“When I started playing I had $15 in my online Lottery account and won $150,” said Rawson. “That’s when I decided to give Diamond Payout a try. On my second $20 ticket, I won $1 million and I was flabbergasted.”

Rawson didn’t believe what she was seeing and showed her son the ticket on her iPad.

“My son and I couldn’t believe what we saw on the screen, we were in shock,” said Rawson. “I checked my email and had a confirmation from the Lottery that I had won with instructions to call and make an appointment to collect my $1 million prize. That’s when it started to sink in that I had really won.”

For Rawson, who works as an instructional aide at a local elementary school, winning $1 million couldn’t have come at a better time. She recently won a cruise, but had to decline the trip to have a medical procedure done and was left with medical bills to pay.

With her windfall, Rawson is considering buying a new home, paying off some bills, taking a vacation, and investing the remainder for retirement for her and her husband, Albert.

“Albert and I are blessed to have won $1 million, but plan to continue living our lives and serving our community the way we always have,” said Rawson. “This will just make us a little more comfortable.”

Rawson always has enjoyed playing the Lottery’s instant games and began playing online games shortly after they were launched last year. She still enjoys buying instant game tickets at her local retailer and buys the Online Game Card as well.

“The Online Game Card makes playing online games convenient. The $5 bonus I get for each card is very appealing to me and is the only way I play online,” said Rawson.

Michigan Lottery players have a chance to win up to $1 million instantly playing online. The Lottery offers players 15 different games ranging in price from 25 cents to $20. Players may purchase an Online Game Card at Lottery retailers across the state for $20. Each Online Game Card includes $5 in free bonus play when redeemed online.
