A St. Clair County woman can’t believe she won $500,000 playing the Michigan Lottery’s Triple Bonus Cashword instant game.

Annette Reynolds, of Capac, bought her winning ticket at Dove’s Corner Market, located at 7847 East Imlay City Road in Imlay City. Capac is about 25 miles east of Lapeer.

“I bought the ticket Thursday, stuck it in my purse, and forgot I had it,” said the 59-year-old Reynolds. “I was digging through my purse looking for something on Saturday when I found the ticket.

“I started scratching while I was on the phone with my daughter, and I uncovered nine words. I said: ‘Hey! I just won $1,000! Unless I find one more word, then I win $500,000!’ As we continued talking I was double checking the ticket, and I couldn’t concentrate so I told my daughter I had to go. That is when I saw I had missed the letter ‘C’ in the word ‘watch’ and realized I really had won $500,000!”

Reynolds visited Lottery headquarters Tuesday to claim her big prize. With her winnings, she plans to pay bills and take a trip to visit her brother out west.

“This means so much to my family. It’s such a relief to know that we can do all of the things we’ve been working so hard to do,” Reynolds said.

Players have won more than $35 million playing Triple Bonus Cashword, which launched in December 2016. Each $10 ticket offers players a chance to win prizes ranging from $10 up to $500,000.

Lottery instant games may be purchased at 11,000 retailers across the state.

In 2016, Lottery players won nearly $817 million playing instant games.

A Van Buren County educator known for incorporating the use of technology in his classroom and for his extensive involvement and leadership in extracurricular activities has been honored with an Excellence in Education award from the Michigan Lottery.

The award winner, Lucas Smith, teaches science and social studies for the sixth and eighth grades at Bangor Middle School, which is part of the Bangor Public Schools. This school year, his activities outside the classroom include coaching junior varsity volleyball, middle school track, the middle school robotics team, and also serving as the middle school parent involvement representative and as a member of the school improvement team.

The Michigan Lottery established the Excellence in Education awards in 2014 to recognize outstanding public school educators across the state during the school year.

Winners of the weekly award receive a plaque, a $1,500 cash prize, and a $500 grant to their classroom, school or school district. One of the weekly winners will be selected as the Educator of the Year and will receive a $10,000 cash prize.

Each winner also is featured in a news segment on the Lottery’s media partner stations: WXYZ-TV in Detroit, FOX 17 in Grand Rapids, FOX 47 in Lansing, and WNEM-TV in Saginaw. The news segment featuring Smith will air this evening in Grand Rapids and Lansing, and then on Thursday in Saginaw and Detroit.

Smith said his favorite part of being an educator is that “every day is a new opportunity to either discover myself or see a child discover something life changing. This daily possibility makes waking up and going to school exciting and motivating.”

He said that his focus is making school enjoyable for his students. “I want them to love to come to school and love the experience. The more they love school, the more they’re going to get out of it.”

He said his decision to pursue a career in education was sparked by an experience he had as an elementary student, when as a fifth-grader he was teamed up as a “school buddy” with a first-grade student. “Ever since fifth grade, I’ve enjoyed helping others,” he said.

Smith said his students motivate him to do his best every day and to tackle a long list of duties and responsibilities outside the classroom. “Plus I attend as many extra-curricular activities as possible,” he said. “I do all these things because it takes the entire community to help the students achieve and by being as involved as possible in every facet of their education, you build relationships that produce positive results for everyone!”

The Excellence in Education award nomination for Smith described him as “a vital asset” to the Bangor Public Schools.

“For the past three years, Mr. Smith has been diligently incorporating technology into his classroom for his students. By writing grants, using social media fundraising and his own money, this year he was able to provide his classroom a set of Chromebooks for his students. His three-year effort started with a handful of tablets, then a transition to Google Classroom and this year with the Chromebooks, a full iteration of Google Classroom,” the nomination said, noting his extensive list of activities outside the classroom.

“Mr. Smith is also a teaching mentor to student teachers and serves on the teacher interviewing committees and teacher negotiations.”

Smith earned two degrees from Western Michigan University: a bachelor of arts degree and a master’s degree in educational leadership. He has been an educator for 14 years, the last five with the Bangor Public Schools.

Mackinac County Man Wins $4.3 Million Lotto 47 Jackpot from the Michigan Lottery

A Mackinac County man can’t wait to “share with family” after winning a $4.3 million Lotto 47 jackpot from the Michigan Lottery.

The lucky player, who chose to remain anonymous, matched all six Lotto 47 numbers drawn Nov. 1: 16-20-23-32-37-45. He bought his winning ticket at the Kwik Mart, located at 330 East Main Street in Walkerville. This is the seventh time in 2017 a player has won the Lotto 47 jackpot.

“I was visiting family members down state and stopped to buy a Lotto 47 ticket,” said the player. “A few days later, I was having a burger and beer near my home when I noticed my wallet was full of tickets, so I started scanning them on the self-service machine.

“When I scanned the Lotto 47 ticket, I got a funny message so I set it aside thinking I’d check it again at the end of my tickets. When I checked it again, I got the same message, so I took it up to the bartender. She handed it back to me and told me I’d won big. I asked my stepdaughter to text the winning numbers from Nov.1 to me. When I saw I’d matched all six, I screamed: ‘Oh my god!’”

The lucky player visited Lottery headquarters Thursday to claim his big prize. He chose to receive his prize as a one-time lump sum payment of about $2.8 million, rather than an annuity. He plans to share his winnings with his family, and may buy a newer truck.

“This is still all sinking in,” said the player. “I can’t wait to help my family out with this jackpot. When I see the look on each of their faces is when I think it will really set in that I’m a millionaire.”

“I’ve got six kids and several grandkids, so I’ll probably be half-broke by the time I’m done with them,” the player joked. “But it’ll be worth it!”

Each Lotto 47 play is only $1. Players select six numbers from one to 47 for a chance to win a jackpot starting at $1 million and that grows until someone wins it. For an additional $1 per game, players may add EZMatch to their ticket for a chance to win up to $500 instantly. Lotto 47 drawings take place on Wednesday and Saturday at 7:29 p.m. Tickets may be purchased until 7:08 p.m. on the day of the drawing.
