Mecosta County Educator Wins Excellence in Education Award from the Michigan Lottery

T.J. Klein holding $2,000 Excellence in Education checkA Mecosta County educator known for shaping young people to be their best has been honored with an Excellence In Education award from the Michigan Lottery.

The award winner, T.J. Klein, teaches high school math at Big Rapids High School. The school is part of Big Rapids Public Schools.

The Michigan Lottery established the Excellence In Education awards in 2014 to recognize outstanding public-school educators across the state during the school year.

Winners of the weekly award receive a $2,000 cash prize. At the end of the school year, one of the weekly award winners will be selected to receive the Lottery’s Educator of the Year award and will receive a $10,000 cash prize.

Each winner also is featured in a news segment on the Lottery’s media partner stations: WXYZ-TV in Detroit, FOX 17 in Grand Rapids, FOX 47 in Lansing, WNEM-TV in Saginaw, and WWTV-TV in Traverse City. The news segment featuring Klein will air this evening.

Klein says wanting to be a positive role model to students is what led him to a career in education.

“I wanted to be a positive role model for students and help them establish usable tactics for life. Teaching is very rewarding and the impact you get to make on students lasts forever.”

Klein says his favorite activities to do with students are playing math baseball and whiteboard activities.

“Playing math baseball for a test review is my favorite thing to do with my students. I also enjoy doing whiteboard activities.”

Klein was nominated for the award by a student.

“If you ask any student at Big Rapids High School, they will tell you that Coach Klein is simply the best. T.J. teaches math but has other great ways he teaches students too. Last year, he coached JV tennis and has been an assistant hockey coach for many years. Through coaching, he has connected with many students. He builds them up, encourages them, and helps them through the struggles high school can bring.

“You will rarely find T.J. alone. He comes in early in the morning to help students who need extra help. At lunch, you will find T.J. with kids in his classroom playing ping pong or just hanging out. He is patient, kind, selfless, and compassionate, while still holding his students accountable. He is not only concerned about his students’ academics but shaping young people to be their best.”

Klein earned a bachelor’s degree from Ferris State University and a master’s degree from Western Governors University. He has been an educator for eight years, all in his current position.

Excellence in Education award nominees are evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Excellence – Their work consistently helps students and/or their schools or school districts advance to higher levels of academic achievement.
  • Dedication – They consistently go above and beyond expectations to help students succeed.
  • Inspiration – Their work inspires others around them to exceed expectations either academically or professionally.
  • Leadership – They demonstrate clear leadership skills in their positions with their school or school districts.
  • Effectiveness – The nominee’s work has clear and positive results on the educational advancement of students within the school or school district.

Calhoun County Lottery Club Wins $100,000 Powerball Prize from the Michigan Lottery

Winning TicketMembers of a Calhoun County lottery club who have been playing the lottery together for 14 years have won a $100,000 Powerball prize from the Michigan Lottery.

The four-person Blessed lottery club matched four white balls and the Powerball – 09-35-54-63-64, PB: 01 – in the Oct. 4 drawing to win a $50,000 prize. Thanks to the Power Play, the prize was multiplied to $100,000. The winning ticket was bought at Wyoming Gas and More, located at 8820 Wyoming Street in Detroit.

“Me and a few coworkers started a Lottery club about 14 years ago and we have been playing together ever since,” said the club’s representative, Fredrick Richardson Jr. “One club member buys tickets to cover drawings for an entire month and then lets the other club members know if we win anything.

“A club member sent me a picture of our Powerball ticket saying we won $100,000, but I didn’t think it was real at first. Once I looked up the winning numbers, I realized we really did win! We all feel so blessed. It hasn’t sunk in for any of us quite yet, but once the money is in the bank, I think it will start to feel real.”

The club recently visited Lottery headquarters to claim their prize. With their winnings, they each plan to pay bills and then save the remainder.

Powerball plays may be purchased for $2 each at Lottery retailers across the state and online at MichiganLottery.com. A “Power Play” option that multiplies non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times to a maximum of $2 million may be added to any Powerball play for only $1. For an additional $1 per play, Double Play may be added to a Powerball ticket, giving players a second chance to win up to $10 million in the nightly Double Play drawing.

The Powerball drawing takes place at 10:59 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday and may be watched live online at: http://www.powerball.com. Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington D.C., U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

Oscoda County Man Wins $25,000 a Year for Life from the Michigan Lottery Playing Lucky For Life

Lucky For LifeAn Oscoda County man got the surprise of a lifetime when he logged in to his Michigan Lottery account and saw he’d won $25,000 a year for life playing the Lucky For Life game.

Ray Wcisel, of Mio, won the big prize when his Lucky For Life ticket matched the five white balls drawn on Oct. 1: 11-13-24-29-47. He bought the winning ticket online at MichiganLottery.com.

“I only purchase tickets online, and Lucky for Life is the game I like most,” said Wcisel. “I saw an email from the Lottery late one night about claiming a prize, but I assumed it was a phishing email. I logged in to my Lottery account to double check, and when I saw the prize pending in my account, I knew the email was real. It was the best feeling I’ve ever had!”

Wcisel, 62, visited Lottery headquarters recently to claim his prize. He chose to receive his winnings as a one-time lump sum payment of $390,000, rather than annuity payments of $25,000 a year for 20 years or life, whichever is greater. He plans to invest his winnings.

For just $2 per play, Lucky For Life gives Lottery players a chance to win prizes ranging from $3 to a lifetime of cash. To win the game’s top prize of $1,000 a day for life, players must match all five winning numbers ranging from 1 to 48, plus one Lucky Ball ranging from 1 to 18. Players who match all five winning numbers, but not the Lucky Ball, will win $25,000 a year for life. Drawings take place at 10:38 p.m. seven days-a-week. Tickets may be purchased at Lottery retailers across the state and online at MichiganLottery.com.
