Canton Woman Wins $3 Million Mega Millions Prize from the Michigan Lottery

Mega MillionsA Canton woman couldn’t believe her eyes when she logged in to her Michigan Lottery account and saw a $3 million Mega Millions prize pending!

Reagan Blanton, 52, matched the five white balls in the Oct. 6 drawing to win $1 million: 12-24-46-57-66. Thanks to the Megaplier, her prize was multiplied to $3 million. She bought her winning ticket online at MichiganLottery.com.

“I was on vacation and saw the Mega Millions jackpot was getting up there, so I made a mental note to purchase a ticket online when I got home,” said Blanton. “A few days after the drawing, I remembered I hadn’t checked my ticket, so I logged in to my Lottery account to see if I won anything.

“When I saw a $3 million prize pending, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! I showed my husband, and he didn’t believe it was real either, so I called the Lottery to double check. When the Lottery employee confirmed I really did win, I was in shock!”

Blanton recently visited headquarters to claim her prize. She plans to invest her winnings.

Mega Millions drawings take place each Tuesday and Friday evening. Each Mega Millions play is only $2. For an additional $1 per play, players have the opportunity to add a “Megaplier” that can multiply non-jackpot prizes by up to five times. Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Newaygo County Educator Wins Excellence in Education Award from the Michigan Lottery

Theresa Dean-Rumsey holding $2,000 Excellence in Education checkA Newaygo County educator known for her “purple pen of love” has been honored with an Excellence In Education award from the Michigan Lottery.

The award winner, Theresa Dean-Rumsey, is an English teacher at Hesperia High School. The school is part of the Hesperia Community Schools.

The Michigan Lottery established the Excellence In Education awards in 2014 to recognize outstanding public-school educators across the state during the school year.

Winners of the weekly award receive a $2,000 cash prize. At the end of the school year, one of the weekly award winners will be selected to receive the Lottery’s Educator of the Year award and will receive a $10,000 cash prize.

Each winner also is featured in a news segment on the Lottery’s media partner stations: WXYZ-TV in Detroit, FOX 17 in Grand Rapids, FOX 47 in Lansing, WNEM-TV in Saginaw, and WWTV-TV in Traverse City. The news segment featuring Dean-Rumsey will air this evening.

Dean-Rumsey says she has always wanted to be a teacher for as long as she can remember.

“My grandma was a kindergarten and music teacher in the same school I attended – where I now teach –  and my first “teaching” experience in front of a class was reading to her kindergartners when I was in third grade.”

Dean-Rumsey says she is motivated by her love of literature and desire to help students reach their full potential.

“I’m motivated by my love of literature and my desire to help students reach their potential. I was inspired to implement AP classes at our high school after realizing that we needed to offer more rigorous courses to prepare our college-bound students. The AP English program has grown from one class of four students the first year (2008) to a full honors English program for grades 8-12, along with AP literature and composition, AP language and composition, and this year I’m teaching an AP Seminar for the first time. I look forward each day to helping students engage in critical reading, writing, and thinking.”

Dean-Rumsey was nominated for the award by her colleague Jennifer Sherburn, whose two sons are students in her AP and honors English classes.

“The “purple pen of love” graces the many pages of student’s essays in Mrs. Dean-Rumsey’s English classroom. She explains to her eighth-grade students that her purple pen, with which she assesses everything, is her dedication to helping them reach their full potential. She is one of the most dedicated and respected educators I have ever known. I feel beyond blessed that both of my teenage boys get to have her for their English teacher for five years. In our small school, students have the opportunity to take honors English in eighth grade, which begins the preparation for Advanced Placement Literature and Advanced Placement Language and Composition as juniors and seniors. Most impressively, she takes average students, often from underprivileged homes and turns them into amazing readers and writers who score above average on the National AP exams. Our school is very fortunate to have someone of her motivation and dedication to lead, guide, and inspire our students. Students know she cares deeply about their success and ensuring preparedness for higher education or their next steps in life.”

Dean-Rumsey earned a bachelor’s degree from Alma College and a master’s degrees from Central Michigan University and Grand Valley State University. She has been an educator for 36 years, the last 28 in her current position.

Excellence in Education award nominees are evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Excellence – Their work consistently helps students and/or their schools or school districts advance to higher levels of academic achievement.
  • Dedication – They consistently go above and beyond expectations to help students succeed.
  • Inspiration – Their work inspires others around them to exceed expectations either academically or professionally.
  • Leadership – They demonstrate clear leadership skills in their positions with their school or school districts.
  • Effectiveness – The nominee’s work has clear and positive results on the educational advancement of students within the school or school district.

Winning TicketA store clerk’s lucky pick led to a Delta County woman winning a $2 million prize playing the Michigan Lottery’s $2,000,000 Cash Multiplier instant game.

The 30-year-old player, who chose to remain anonymous, bought her winning ticket at North Bluff Grocery, located at 6287 State Highway M35 in Gladstone.

“I don’t buy instant tickets often, but I play the Daily Spin to Win game every day in hopes of winning the monthly $5,000 giveaway,” the player said. “I won a $20 coupon playing Daily Spin to Win, so I took it to the store and asked the clerk which ticket I should buy. She suggested the new $2,000,000 Cash Multiplier game, so that’s what I purchased.

“I scratched the ticket when I got home and had a hard time believing it was real when I saw I won $2 million. I called my dad, and he told me to take it to the retailer to double check it. When the retailer confirmed it was a winning ticket, I called my dad screaming as soon as I got in my car!”

The lucky player recently visited Lottery headquarters to claim the big prize. She chose to receive her prize as a one-time lump sum payment of about $1.3 million, rather than annuity payments for the full amount. With her winnings, she plans to pay bills and invest.

The free Daily Spin to Win game gives players the opportunity to spin a prize wheel each day that they log in to their Lottery account. Players can earn bonus credit, retail free play, or entries into a monthly $5,000 giveaway.

Players have won more than $12 million playing $2,000,000 Cash Multiplier, which launched in December. Each $20 ticket offers players a chance to win prizes ranging from $20 up to $2 million.
