A Wayne County man thought a joke was being played on him when a retailer told him he’d won $1 million from the Michigan Lottery playing Mega Millions.
Theodore Norwood, 77, of Westland, matched the five white balls in the July 21 drawing to win $1 million: 29-40-47-50-57. He bought his winning ticket at Hunter and Wayne Liquor, located at 35201 Hunter Street in Westland.
“I stopped into Hunter and Wayne Liquor to check my tickets,” said Norwood. “The clerk ran my ticket and then went to the back to get the owner. When they came out, they ran the ticket again and the owner called me to the side and told me I had won $1 million, and I needed to go home and call my family. That’s exactly what I did.”
Norwood recently visited headquarters to claim his prize. With his winnings, he plans to travel and then save the remainder.
“I’m not really familiar with the feeling of being a millionaire, but I guess I am about to find out what it’s like!” Norwood said.
Norwood won his big prize during the recent record-setting Mega Millions jackpot run. The $1.602 billion Mega Millions jackpot was won Aug. 8 with a single jackpot-winning ticket sold in Florida. After 32 drawings, the jackpot run ended as the highest Mega Millions jackpot and second largest jackpot prize in U.S. history.
Mega Millions drawings take place each Tuesday and Friday evening. Each Mega Millions play is only $2. For an additional $1 per play, players have the opportunity to add a “Megaplier” that can multiply non-jackpot prizes by up to five times. Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
