What an Illinois man thought was a $2,000 prize ended up being a $1 million Mystery Multiplier top prize.
The lucky player, who chose to remain anonymous, bought his winning ticket at the Speedway gas station, located at 24118 Cole Avenue in Mattawan. Mattawan is about 15 miles southwest of Kalamazoo.
“I’m a truck driver, so I’m in Michigan a lot and like to buy Lottery tickets while I’m here,” said the player. “I scratched the barcode and scanned the ticket right when I purchased it. When I got a message to file a claim, I assumed I had won one of the $2,000 prizes.
“I scratched the ticket when I got back in my truck and couldn’t believe it when I saw I’d won $1 million. I didn’t believe it was real until I called the Lottery office to confirm my prize.”
The 48-year-old player visited Lottery headquarters recently to claim his prize. He chose to receive his prize as a one-time lump sum payment of about $693,000 rather than 30 annuity payments for the full amount. With his winnings, he plans to purchase a new vehicle and then save the remainder.
Players have won more than $15 million playing Mystery Multiplier which launched in April. Each $10 ticket offers players a chance to win prizes ranging from $10 up to $1 million. More than $39 million in prizes remain, including two $1 million top prizes and 83 $2,000 prizes.
In 2021, Lottery players won more than $1.8 billion playing instant games.
