Detroit Woman Wins $1 Million Powerball Prize

A Detroit woman is ready to make a better life for her family after winning $1 million from the Michigan Lottery playing Powerball.

LaSharda Morrison, 43, matched the five white balls – 12-22-26-46-59 – in the Aug. 28 drawing to win a $1 million prize. She bought her winning ticket at the Six Mile X-Press Party Store, located at 19410 West McNichols Road in Detroit.

“I buy a Powerball ticket every now and then if I’m feeling lucky, or if the jackpot is creeping up,” said Morrison. “I walked around with this ticket for a couple weeks after the drawing before I even checked it.

“When I checked it at the store, I thought something was off. I pulled the numbers up on my phone and I was stunned.”

Morrison recently visited Lottery headquarters to claim her prize. With her winnings she plans to purchase a new home, take her family on a camping trip, and then save the remainder.

“You always want to do better for your kids. With this money, I know I can help them have a better life and set them up for years to come,” Morrison said.

Powerball plays may be purchased for $2 each at Lottery retailers across the state and online at MichiganLottery.com. A “Power Play” option that multiplies non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times to a maximum of $2 million may be added to any Powerball play for only $1. For an additional $1 per play, Double Play may be added to a Powerball ticket, giving players a second chance to win up to $10 million in the nightly Double Play drawing.

The Powerball drawing takes place at 10:59 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday and may be watched live online at: http://www.powerball.com. Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington D.C., U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
