An 18-year-old Emmet County man isn’t going to spend like he just fell off the turnip truck after winning $100,000 playing the Michigan Lottery’s $100 Grand Cashword instant game.

Kainin Turnipseed, of Alanson, bought his winning $100 Grand Cashword ticket at the Alanson Market, located at 7640 Highway 31 South in Alanson. Alanson is located about 30 miles south of Mackinaw City.

“My girlfriend, Jessica, and I stopped and bought three Cashword tickets because it’s her favorite game,” said Turnipseed. “It was shocking when I scratched off a $100,000 winner, neither of us could believe it.

“We didn’t tell anyone that we had won a big prize. We put the ticket in a lockbox and went out to dinner to celebrate.”

Turnipseed visited Lottery headquarters on Thursday to claim his big prize. With his winnings, he plans to pay off Jessica’s parent’s home, buy a new car, and then save the remainder.

“We’ve been living with Jessica’s parents for a while and they have been very helpful, so I’m happy to be able to do something for them. I know I’m young, but I’m going to be smart about how I spend this,” Turnipseed said.

Players have won nearly $18 million playing $100 Grand Cashword, which launched in March 2016. Each $3 ticket offers players a chance to win prizes ranging from $3 up to $100,000. More than $10 million in prizes remain, including three $100,000 top prizes and 79 $1,000 prizes.

Lottery instant games may be purchased at 11,000 retailers across the state.

In 2016, Lottery players won nearly $817 million playing instant games.
