John Swisher, of Brighton, bought a Mega Millions ticket and added the Megaplier option at the Grand Party Store, located at 5760 Whitmore Lake Road in Brighton. His lucky ticket matched the five white balls drawn – 10-11-31-41-44 – which is a $1 million win, but with a two times Megaplier the prize was multiplied by two, yielding a $2 million prize.
“I always add the Megaplier any time I play Mega Millions, and it really paid off,” said Swisher. “I woke up Saturday morning a multimillionaire!”
At first, Swisher thought he had matched four numbers. It wasn’t until he got a second look that he realized he had matched five.
“I turned on the news early Saturday morning and I caught a glimpse of the numbers on the ticker,” said Swisher. “They moved so quick, I missed the number ‘31’ so I thought I’d won $10,000 and I was pleased with that.
“When my wife and I checked the numbers for a second time, I saw I had five and screamed ’Oh my God!’ We both started praying immediately.”
Swisher visited Lottery headquarters with his wife Monday to claim his big prize. With his winnings he plans to pay his bills, help some family members in need, take a trip with his wife, and then save the remainder.
“I play the Lottery every day, to win this much leaves me feeling numb,” Swisher said.
Mega Millions drawings take place each Tuesday and Friday evening. Each Mega Millions play is only $1. For an additional $1 per play, players have the opportunity to add a “Megaplier” that can multiply non-jackpot prizes by up to five times.
Mega Millions tickets for tonight’s drawing may be purchased at the Lottery’s 11,000 retailers around the state until 10:45 p.m.
