A Detroit retiree wasn’t sure how to react after winning $1 million playing the Michigan Lottery’s $1,000,000 Spectacular instant game.
“I don’t know how to be surprised or celebrate because I’ve never won anything close to this,” said the player, who chose to remain anonymous. “It doesn’t even seem real.”
The avid Lottery player stopped at the Kennedy Liquor Store, located at 13344 West 7 Mile Road in Detroit, Monday morning to purchase a ticket for his favorite game: $1,000,000 Spectacular.
“The $1,000,000 Spectacular game has been pretty good to me, I’ve won $25 or $50 playing it so I bought another ticket,” said the player. “I scratched the ticket and told myself I need to look at it again because there was no way I would win $1 million!”
The player was calm and ready to claim his big prize when he arrived at Lottery headquarters Monday afternoon.
The player chose to receive his prize in a one-time lump sum payment of $634,517, rather than a 30-year annuity. He plans to use his winnings to continue enjoying his retirement. He plans to take his wife on a vacation and then invest the remainder of his prize.
“I’ve been retired for a while, but still do odd jobs to make ends meet,” said the player. “Now I can be more choosey about what work I want to take on.”
Each $1,000,000 Spectacular ticket gives players a chance to win prizes ranging from $10 up to $1 million. About $22.6 million in prizes remain for the game, including 48 $10,000 prizes and 926 $1,000 prizes.
Lottery instant game tickets may be purchased at retailers around the state.
