“I was very surprised, I’ve never won anything,” said William Penn of his $250,000 Mega Millions win.
Penn found out he was a winner by checking his numbers against those published in the newspaper. He doesn’t play very often so his big win was a big surprise.
So far he has no plans on how he’ll spend the money, but he’ll continue to enjoy his hobbies of reading, working jigsaw puzzles and watching sports on television.
The winning ticket was sold by Hayes Market located at 22580 Telegraph Rd. in Southfield.
Over 95 cents of every dollar spent on Lottery tickets is returned to the state in the form of contributions to the state School Aid Fund, prizes to players and commissions to retailers. In fiscal year 2011, the contribution to schools was over $727.3 million. Since its inception in 1972, the Lottery has contributed over $16 billion to education in Michigan.
