LANSING, June 14, 2000 — The three members of "The Breakfast Club" lottery club of Temperance — who attended high school together — faithfully purchase Michigan Lottery Big Game tickets every week hoping to win big! "The Breakfast Club" recently saw the dream of hitting it big with the Michigan Lottery come true after winning a top Michigan Lottery prize!
The three lucky 53-year-old ladies in "The Breakfast Club" matched the first five numbers in the June 2 Big Game drawing, collecting the game’s $150,000 prize. That day’s winning numbers were: 5, 24, 26, 39, 44 and the Big Money Ball number was 3.
Club members, who, despite living in three different cities, faithfully meet for breakfast every Friday morning, include:
- Judith Binger of Temperance
- Mary Johnston of Manitou Beach
- Mary Jo Frohlich of Brooklyn
While they attended the same high school, the lucky ladies have taken different paths in their post-high school lives. Binger recruits teachers for Catholic schools, Johnston is a homemaker and Frohlich works at a beauty shop in Lambertville.
"I left the ticket in my car when I got home from work" said Binger, the club representative. "I called one of the other club members to find out what the winning numbers were. I wrote them down and ended up checking the ticket about three hours later. I called my friend back immediately and screamed ‘We won! We won!’ Neither of the other two club members believed me at first. We were all very surprised!"
The winning Big Game "easy pick" ticket was purchased at Dairy Mart #9977, 8012 Lewis Ave., in Temperance. Prior to turning the winning ticket in at Lottery headquarters in Lansing, Binger said she kept it "in a safe place."
The club members have a variety of plans for their winnings including jewelry shopping, investing for retirement, paying bills, sharing with their families and making home improvements.
In addition to playing Lottery games and having breakfast together, the lucky ladies also have a variety of ways they like to spend their free time. Binger said she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, Frohlich keeps an eye out for interesting frog statues to add to her "frog collection" and Johnston likes to cruise the open road on her Harley-Davidson motorcycle!
The winners, who find Lottery games very entertaining, encourage other Lottery hopefuls to keep playing Lottery games and offered the following words of wisdom: "You never know when you might win! You can’t win if you don’t play!"
The Big Game is a multistate lottery game in Michigan, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Virginia. Wagers cost $1 each and tickets may be purchased at more than 6,400 Michigan Lottery retailers statewide.
Big Game drawings are conducted every Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m. The next Big Game drawing is Friday, June 16 with an expected jackpot of $7 million.
