LANSING, June 9, 2000 — A Detroit woman’s persistence really paid off! After consistently playing a combination of family members’ birthdays on the Michigan Lotto game for several years, the lucky lady enjoyed a big payday — a Lotto jackpot worth $2,130,446!
The new millionaire, who requested anonymity, was the only Michigan Lottery player to match all six numbers in the May 27 Michigan Lotto drawing: 1, 6, 12, 18, 21 and 29.
That day’s announced jackpot was $4.1 million. The winner, however, chose to receive her winnings in one lump-sum payment for $2,130,446, the present cash value of the jackpot before taxes.
"We were out of town for Memorial Day weekend and didn’t think to check for the winning Lotto numbers while we were gone," the winner said. "When we returned home, we went to the local Meijer store to pick up some milk. We stopped at the Lotto desk for a minute to check the winning numbers. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! I always play the same numbers, so I knew immediately that I had matched all six. It was completely unbelievable!"
The winning Michigan Lotto ticket was sold at F&M #766, 18859 E. 9 Mile Road, in Eastpointe. Prior to turning the winning ticket in at Lottery headquarters in Lansing, the winner said she kept it in a "safe place."
Michigan’s newest Lottery millionaire said she plans to invest her winnings for retirement. The Detroit woman said she believes anyone can win the Lottery, and she encouraged others to keep playing because "it’s all luck!"
The winner became the 56th Detroit resident in Michigan Lottery history to win a Lotto jackpot prize. Combined, these lucky Detroit winners have collected over $178 million in Michigan Lotto jackpot prizes!
Michigan Lotto drawings are conducted every Wednesday and Saturday. The estimated jackpot for the Saturday, June 10 drawing is $2.5 million.
