Michigan Lottery Announces First Group Of Winners In The Daily 3 'Fly Away Cash & Dash' Second-Chance Sweepstakes!

LANSING, May 18, 1998 – The Michigan Lottery has completed the first drawing in its current Daily 3 second-chance sweepstakes and the winners are turning up in all parts of the state!  The grand-prize winners – each collecting $5,000 cash and two first-class flight certificates – are:

    • Millie Kalanik of Redford;
    • Brad Boyd of Albion;
    • Harold Bujalski of Bay City;
    • Brenda Leger of Detroit; and
    • Ann Abbott of Coopersville.

Throughout the Daily 3 "Fly Away Cash & Dash" promotion, the Lottery will award each week for six weeks five grand prizes of $5,000 cash and two first-class flight certificates; 25 second-place prizes of $1,500; and 100 stylish travel bags.  Lottery officials were able to speak to a few of the grand-prize winners after the drawing.

"Wow!  This is the last thing I ever thought I’d win!" said Millie Kalanik, a grand-prize winner.  "Oh my gosh; thank you!  I never thought I had a chance to win this."

Kalanik, 68, has been a regular Michigan Lottery player since 1972.  She said she and her husband, Joseph, had no immediate travel plans in mind.

Kalanik’s winning entry included Daily 3 tickets purchased at Wine Baron, 25303 Plymouth Road, in Redford.

Albion resident Brad Boyd’s winning entry included tickets purchased at Buddy’s Mini Mart #9, 133 S. Main St., in Concord, and Shortstoppe, 116 S. Clark St., in Albion.

Bay City resident Harold Bujalski said he plans to use his airline vouchers for a Las Vegas vacation this winter.  The retiree from 4D Builders Supply in Midland was surprised to learn he was one of the five grand-prize winners.

"Really, I won?" he asked.  "I didn’t expect to get this phone call today!  I’m going to send in more entries next week too!"

Bujalski’s entry included tickets purchased at Kawkalin Party Shop, 105 Grove St., in Kawkalin, and Paul’s Place, 2509 W. Midland Road, in Midland.

"This is a great surprise!" said Brenda Leger of Detroit.  "When I try to win things, usually I just miss, but this is wonderful."

Leger, 28, is a student in the occupational therapy program at Wayne County Community College.  She said she may use her airline vouchers for a trip to New York.

Leger’s winning entry included Daily 3 tickets purchased at Michael’s Short Stop, 18850 W. McNichols Road, in Detroit, and Parklane Cork & Bottle, 19150 W. McNichols Road, in Detroit.

"Holy cow!  I won?  Really?" said grand-prize winner Ann Abbott of Coopersville.  "You really caught me off guard; thank you so much!"

Abbott, 61, has been a regular Michigan Lottery player since 1972.  The Kent County Humane Society retiree said she and her husband, Patrick, may use the airline vouchers to enjoy a second honeymoon.

Her winning entry included tickets purchased at Quick Stop Foods, 327 Main St., in Coopersville.

In addition, the Lottery gave away 25 $1,500 cash prizes to these "Fly Away Cash & Dash" second-place winners:

To enter the Daily 3 "Fly Away Cash & Dash" second-chance sweepstakes, players send in one non-winning Daily 3 mid-day ticket and one non-winning Daily 3 evening ticket for any drawing between May 4, 1998, and June 13, 1998, along with their name, address and daytime telephone number on a separate sheet of paper to: Daily 3 "Fly Away Cash & Dash" Second-Chance Sweepstakes, P.O. Box 5198, Southfield, MI 48086.

Players may enter as many times as they like, but entries must be limited to one entry per envelope.  Players may also drop off entries at any of the Lottery’s regional offices, or participating newspapers and radio stations.

The remaining "Fly Away Cash & Dash" drawings will be held May 20, May 27, June 3, June 10 and June 24. Winners will be announced during the broadcast of the Michigan Lottery "Road to Riches" weekly television game show.
