A Suttons Bay man who is “rich with family” now has cash to match after winning an $80 million Powerball jackpot from the Michigan Lottery.

Phillip Chippewa, 54, matched all of the winning numbers – 01-09-22-36-68 – and the Powerball 22 in the Sept. 21 drawing to win the big prize. He bought the winning ticket at the Barrels & Barrels Party Store, located at 1375 SW Bayshore Drive in Suttons Bay. Suttons Bay is about 20 miles north of Traverse City.

“Any time I see the jackpot getting up there I buy a few tickets and hope for the best,” said Chippewa. “I stopped at Barrels and Barrels the day of the drawing and almost walked out without buying the tickets, but at the last minute, I decided to get four plays.”

It wasn’t until the next evening that Chippewa gave another thought to his Powerball tickets.

“I was at work and my sister sent me a text saying that someone who played at Barrels and Barrels won the Powerball jackpot,” said Chippewa’s wife, Dawn. “My first thought was: ‘He better have bought some tickets!’

“After I got home, we were doing our usual Sunday night routine when my sister sent another text to ask if we’d checked Phillip’s tickets. Until then I had forgotten all about the news of a big winner.”

“After I bought the tickets, I had put them away in my truck,” said Chippewa. “I ran out to take a look at them and I didn’t have to look past the first line to see I was the winner. Of course, my wife and son thought I was playing a trick, so my son pulled the numbers up on his phone and read them out loud while Dawn and I looked at the ticket together. By the time he was done, we both had tears in our eyes.”

To confirm they were big winners, the Chippewas decided to head back to Barrels and Barrels and have their ticket scanned.

“As soon as we walked in the clerk asked: ‘Are you guys the big winners?’ said Chippewa. “I handed him the ticket and said: ‘We’re about to find out.’ When the terminal printed a receipt saying to contact the Lottery, we knew our lives had changed.”

The Chippewas headed back home and contacted the rest of their family so they could share the good news.

“We called a family meeting and told all seven of our kids the good news,” said Chippewa. “There were a lot of emotions in that room because we’ve always put our family first and it hasn’t always been easy, but all of them were so happy for us.

“With seven children and 21 grandchildren, I’ve always said that I might not have the most money, but I am rich with family. Now, I have all the money I’ll ever need and can help my family for generations. That means everything to me.”

Chippewa chose to receive his $80 million jackpot as a one-time lump sum payment of $55.3 million, rather than an annuity. After tax withholdings, he will receive about $42 million. He plans to buy homes for himself and each of his children and continue to share his winnings with his family. A new Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a white Dodge Challenger also are on his shopping list.

“Winning is life changing, but it’s not going to change who we are,” said Chippewa, who is a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. “My wife and I have been together for 25 years, we’ve always helped others and we’re both still working.

“Every day when I come to work my boss asks me: ‘Why are you here?’ I just tell him that I was hired to do a job and I’m not going to abandon anyone just because I won. We’ll both retire in time, but we believe in being good to the community that has been so good to us.”

Chippewa’s big win marks the fourth time a Michigan player has won the Powerball jackpot since the state began offering the game in 2010. The last Michigan player to win the Powerball jackpot was Julie Leach, of Three Rivers. In 2015, Leach won the game’s $310.5 million jackpot.

In 2012, Donald Lawson, of Lapeer, won $337 million playing the Powerball game. Lawson’s jackpot win holds the record for the largest Lottery prize ever paid in Michigan.

Powerball plays may be purchased for $2 each at Lottery retailers across the state and online at MichiganLottery.com. A “Power Play” option that multiplies non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times to a maximum of $2 million may be added to any Powerball play for only $1.

The Powerball drawing takes place at 10:59 p.m. on Wednesday and Saturday and may be watched live online at: http://www.powerball.com. Powerball tickets are sold in 44 states, Washington D.C., U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

A Kent County educator known for using hands on activities, such as tracking the life-cycle of trees, and personalized attention to help her students grow as individuals and succeed in the classroom has been honored with an Excellence in Education award from the Michigan Lottery.

The award winner, Lana Tran (pronounced TRAHN), teaches first grade at Knapp Forest Elementary School, in Grand Rapids. The school is part of the Forest Hills Public Schools.

The Michigan Lottery established the Excellence in Education awards in 2014 to recognize outstanding public school educators across the state during the school year.

Winners of the weekly award receive a plaque, a $1,500 cash prize, and a $500 grant to their classroom, school or school district.  One of the weekly winners will be selected as the Educator of the Year and will receive a $10,000 cash prize.

Each winner also is featured in a news segment on the Lottery’s media partner stations:  WXYZ-TV in Detroit, FOX 17 in Grand Rapids, FOX 47 in Lansing, and WNEM-TV in Saginaw. The news segment featuring Tran will air this evening in Grand Rapids and Lansing, and then on Thursday in Saginaw and Detroit.

Tran said she was attracted to a career in education because “I’ve had many wonderful teachers who were very supportive and caring and whom I looked up to.  They inspire me to do my very best.”

She said that being with her students is her favorite part of being an educator. “I love seeing their smiling faces first thing in the morning or receiving an email from a parent in the evening telling me that their kids love school or had a great day.”

Tran said the importance of getting her young students off to a good start in school motivates her to do her best every day.  “I want to make their early school experience positive and memorable.  At the end of the school year, I want all of my children to have had a fantastic year in first grade, really enjoy being school and become much better readers and writers than when they first came into my classroom.”

A student’s mother nominated Tran for the Excellence in Education award, describing her as “an exceptional teacher.  She is kind, thoughtful, caring, and the hardest working teacher I have ever met. She works day and night to provide the best learning environment for her students. Each child is unique to her and no one two students are taught in the same way. She is amazing.”

“She goes beyond expectations to get her first graders learning every single day. My son did not love kindergarten and struggled to read. When he became a student of Mrs. Tran’s, he began to love school. She is dedicated to helping all her students succeed. Every day the students are engaged in fun learning activities. All units are hands-on, fun, and allow students to discover knowledge,” the nomination said.

“The students work together daily on reading strategies, math skills, technology, and science. They have watched the life-cycle of trees through the year, cleaned the school grounds for Earth Day, became word detectives where they took ownership of learning words and reading strategies, and learned to be good and kind humans.

“Mrs. Tran sends home weekly newsletters, so all parents are informed about the learning activities and always includes pictures of the students. Each week, a student is the Star of the Week and gets to share information about themselves and sit in the special chair. Every day parents get videos and pictures on Seesaw so we can see what our children are doing and learning,” the mother wrote.

“Her students grow in their academic knowledge and also in their character and willingness to help others. She cares for the whole child and it shows daily. The children feel special in the big and small things she does for them daily. She had the class pick apples and make applesauce in the fall, hot chocolate on a cold winter day, and lots of art projects to help them learn and express themselves. She helped all 23 of her students make special gifts for Mother’s Day, took videos of each student saying a special message to their mom and released them on Seesaw on Mother’s Day.”

Tran, one of the Vietnam boat people, earned a master of arts in education from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids.  She has been an educator for 26 years, all with the Forest Hills Public Schools. “I am very honored and excited to have received this award and I am forever grateful for the opportunity and privilege to work with so many wonderful children and parents!”

Outstanding public school educators may be nominated for an Excellence in Education award at http://bit.ly/ExcellenceInEducation or through the websites of the Lottery’s media partner stations.

Genesee County Man Wins $587,245 Fantasy 5 Jackpot

Listening to a store clerk’s suggestion led to a Genesee County man winning a $587,245 Fantasy 5 jackpot.

The lucky player, who chose to remain anonymous, matched the Fantasy 5 numbers drawn on Aug. 14 to win the big prize: 03-24-25-27-35. He bought his winning ticket at The Liquor Carousel, located at 2372 East Hill Road in Grand Blanc.

“I buy one Mega Millions ticket for each drawing,” said the 70-year-old player. “When I stopped to buy my ticket, the clerk suggested playing Fantasy 5 because the jackpot was pretty high, so I decided to give it a try.

“That night, I matched three numbers and won $10. I reinvested that $10 in more Fantasy 5 tickets the next day and won $10 again. That happened a couple more times and then on Aug. 14, I won the big jackpot!

“When I checked my numbers, I was bewildered. I called my friend and asked him to read the numbers to me just so I knew I wasn’t seeing things incorrectly. I got off work late that night and called my daughter, who lives in California, to tell her the good news. She didn’t believe me and asked me to send a picture of the ticket. Then, she called me back crying tears of joy because she was so happy for me.”

The player recently visited Lottery headquarters to claim the big prize. With his winnings he plans to buy a new vehicle, a new set of golf clubs, and then save the remainder.

Each Fantasy 5 play is only $1. For an additional $1 per play, EZmatch may be added to a Fantasy 5 ticket, giving players a chance to win up to $500 instantly. For an additional $1 per play, Double Play may be added to a Fantasy 5 ticket, giving players a second chance to win up to $110,000 in the nightly Double Play drawing. Fantasy 5 players select five numbers from one to 39. Players who match all five Fantasy 5 numbers drawn win a jackpot that starts at $100,000. Fantasy 5 drawings are held seven days a week at 7:29 p.m. Tonight’s Fantasy 5 jackpot is $100,000.
