Hours Remain for a Chance at $740 Million Powerball Jackpot

Powerball logoOnly hours remain for Michiganders to test their luck and take a chance to win the $740 million Powerball jackpot. The cash option for tonight’s jackpot is $346.1 million.

Retailers throughout the state are selling Powerball tickets until 9:58 p.m. tonight. Tickets also may be purchased online at MichiganLottery.com.

If a player wins the jackpot, it would be the second largest Powerball jackpot won this year. Tonight’s drawing will be the 37th drawing since the jackpot was last won on Sept. 6 when one ticket purchased in Missouri won the $1.78 billion jackpot.

Since the Powerball jackpot run began Sept. 8, Michigan Lottery players have won more than $3 million in prizes.

The Powerball jackpot was last won in Michigan on Jan. 1, 2024, by a Mid-Michigan lottery club. The club won a $842.4 million Powerball jackpot with a ticket purchased in Grand Blanc. That jackpot is the largest Powerball prize ever won in Michigan.

Powerball plays may be purchased for $2 each at Lottery retailers across the state and online at MichiganLottery.com. A “Power Play” option that multiplies non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times to a maximum of $2 million may be added to any Powerball play for only $1. For an additional $1 per play, Double Play may be added to a Powerball ticket, giving players a second chance to win up to $10 million in the nightly Double Play drawing.

The Powerball drawing takes place at 10:59 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday and may be watched live online at: http://www.powerball.com. Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington D.C., U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

Michigan Lottery Warns Public to Be Aware of Prize Scams

Scam alert graphicThe Michigan Lottery is warning the public to be aware of scam artists claiming to be lottery agents or prize winners.

The Michigan Lottery processes all prize claims for free, and players must have a valid winning ticket to claim a prize. If you haven’t bought a Lottery ticket or played a Lottery game, there’s no way you could win a prize.

To check if a lottery prize, offer, or promotion is legitimate, members of the public may contact the Lottery at 844-917-6325, or via email at onlinehelp@michiganlottery.com.

Lottery prize scams surface from time-to-time and have been known to pop up around the holidays. The public should always remain vigilant.

Generally, there are two types of lottery prize scams:

  • A person gets a letter, email, text, or phone call to inform them that they’ve won a big lottery prize but must pay a fee to collect the prize. If the person agrees, the scam artist convinces them to mail a cashier’s check, make an electronic funds transfer, or even arranges a meeting to get the money in cash.
  • A person is contacted by mail, email, text, or phone call by someone claiming to be a lottery prize winner. The scam artist tells the person they will share their prize if the person sends money to them. If the person agrees, the scam artist convinces them to mail a cashier’s check, make an electronic funds transfer, or even arranges a meeting to get the money in cash.

In some cases, after getting money from the victim, the scam artist comes back asking for more for unexpected processing costs or fees or uses some other excuse to try to get more money from the victim.

Unfortunately, the more money the victim supplies, the longer the scam will continue.

If you believe you have been the victim of such a scam, please contact your local law enforcement agency.

A Traverse City man is looking forward to living debt-free after winning a $25,000 a year for life Lucky For Life prize from the Michigan Lottery.

Craig Capell, 68, won the big prize when his Lucky For Life ticket matched the five white balls drawn on Nov. 13: 03-09-16-20-42. He bought his winning ticket at Oleson’s Food Store, located at 3850 North Long Lake Road in Traverse City.

“I always play Mega Millions and Lotto 47, and on the days there’s not a Mega Millions or Lotto 47 drawing, I play Lucky For Life,” said Capell. “I was at the store and realized it was a Lucky For Life day, so I bought my ticket. I was up early the next morning getting ready for a hunting trip and checked my ticket before I left.

“When I saw I’d won $25,000 a year for life, I couldn’t believe it. I had my wife look the ticket over and she was a little skeptical, so I looked online and saw a winner was sold at Oleson’s, which is where I bought my ticket. Once I got home from my trip, I called the Lottery to verify my ticket and that’s when I knew it was real!”

Capell visited Lottery headquarters recently to claim his prize. He chose to receive his winnings as a one-time lump sum payment of $390,000, rather than payments of $25,000 a year for 20 years or life, whichever is greater. With his winnings, he plans to invest, take a vacation, and live debt free.

“Winning still feels pretty unreal, but it’s a relief knowing we will be able to live debt free,” said Capell.

For just $2 per play, Lucky For Life gives Lottery players a chance to win prizes ranging from $3 to a lifetime of cash. To win the game’s top prize of $1,000 a day for life, players must match all five winning numbers ranging from 1 to 48, plus one Lucky Ball ranging from 1 to 18. Players who match all five winning numbers, but not the Lucky Ball, will win $25,000 a year for life. Drawings take place at 10:38 p.m. seven days-a-week. Tickets may be purchased at Lottery retailers across the state and online at MichiganLottery.com.
