Oakland County Woman Claims $131,121 Fantasy 5 Jackpot Prize Weeks Before It Expires

Winning TicketAn Oakland County woman claimed a $131,121 Fantasy 5 jackpot prize from the Michigan Lottery less than three weeks before the prize was set to expire.

The 82-year-old player, who chose to remain anonymous, matched the Fantasy 5 numbers in the Dec. 3, 2024, drawing to win the big prize: 07-10-21-22-26. She bought her winning ticket at Pike Food Center, located at 465 East Pike Street in Pontiac.

“I occasionally play Fantasy 5 because a friend once told me, ‘You can’t win if you don’t play,’” said the player. “After the drawing, I scanned the ticket at the store and got a message to see the clerk. I went home and checked the winning numbers and that’s when I realized I’d won the jackpot. It was a pleasant surprise!”

The lucky player recently visited Lottery headquarters to claim her jackpot. She plans to share her winnings with her family.

“Once I found out I won, I planned to hold onto the ticket for little a while before claiming, and then life got crazy, so I ended up holding onto it for longer than I planned,” said the player. “It’s a relief to finally be cashing it in!”

Each Fantasy 5 play is only $1. For an additional $1 per play, EZmatch may be added to a Fantasy 5 ticket, giving players a chance to win up to $500 instantly. For an additional $1 per play, Double Play may be added to a Fantasy 5 ticket, giving players a second chance to win up to $110,000 in the nightly Double Play drawing. Players may win prizes in the regular nightly drawing, the Double Play drawing, or both. Fantasy 5 players select five numbers from one to 39. Players who match all five Fantasy 5 numbers drawn win a jackpot that starts at $100,000.

Fantasy 5 drawings are held seven days a week at 7:29 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at a retailer or online at MichiganLottery.com until 7:08 p.m. on the day of the drawing.

Kent County Woman Wins $1 Million Playing the Michigan Lottery’s Lady Luck 777 Instant Game

Winning ticketA late-night food run led to a huge payday for a Kent County woman who won $1 million playing the Michigan Lottery’s Lady Luck 777 instant game.

“I woke up hungry late one night, so I went out on a food run,” said the 53-year-old player, who chose to remain anonymous. “While I was out, I bought a few lottery tickets and scratched them when I got home. It was shocking when I scratched off my Lady Luck 777 ticket and saw I’d won $1 million. I had a hard time going back to sleep that night!”

“It’s always fun to hear stories of how winners found out they won huge lottery prizes, like this one where a late-night food run turned into a $1 million win!” said Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli. “Winning a big lottery prize when you least expect it is one of the many reasons instant games are a favorite among our players. Congratulations to the winner on her $1 million win!”

The player bought her winning ticket at D 28 Inc., located at 5 28th Street Southwest in Wyoming. She recently visited Lottery headquarters to claim the big prize. She chose to receive her prize as a one-time lump sum payment of about $693,000, rather than annuity payments for the full amount. She plans to save her winnings.

“I’m still in shock and it hasn’t fully sunk in that I won $1 million, so I haven’t made any specials plans for the money just yet,” the player said.

Players have won more than $19 million playing Lady Luck 777, which launched in August. Each $10 ticket offers players a chance to win prizes ranging from $10 up to $1 million. More than $27 million in prizes remain, including two $1 million top prizes and 384 $1,000 prizes.

In 2024, Lottery players won nearly $1.8 billion playing instant games.

Lottery instant games may be purchased at retailers across the state.

An Ingham County educator who is known for bringing energy and leadership to mathematics education has been honored with an Excellence In Education award from the Michigan Lottery.

The award winner, Jeff Burgess, is a math teacher and department chair at East Lansing High School. The school is part of East Lansing Public Schools.

The Michigan Lottery established the Excellence In Education awards in 2014 to recognize outstanding public-school educators across the state during the school year.

Winners of the weekly award receive a $2,000 cash prize. At the end of the school year, one of the weekly award winners will be selected to receive the Lottery’s Educator of the Year award and will receive a $10,000 cash prize.

Each winner also is featured in a news segment on the Lottery’s media partner stations: WXYZ-TV in Detroit, FOX 17 in Grand Rapids, FOX 47 in Lansing, WLUC in Marquette, WNEM-TV in Saginaw, and WWTV-TV in Traverse City. The news segment featuring Burgess will air this evening.

“Mr. Burgess’s love of math and his dedication to providing students with the tools they need to succeed are truly inspiring,” said Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli. “His ability to take a challenging subject and present it in a way that makes it fun and engaging, combined with his passion for his students, makes him an outstanding educator and a tremendous asset to East Lansing High School.”

Burgess said tutoring classmates in high school and making a difference in students’ lives inspired him to pursue a career in education.

“I was attracted to a career in education as I tutored classmates in mathematics while I was in high school. I also was drawn to being a teacher as I wanted to be able to make a difference in students’ lives. Both of my brothers are teachers, and I see them helping others.”

Burgess was nominated for the award by a colleague.

“Jeff Burgess is a passionate and dedicated mathematics teacher and the department chair at East Lansing High School. His impact goes far beyond the classroom. Through his energy, leadership, and commitment, he has become a vital part of the academic success and positive culture at the school and in the community. Mr. Burgess sets a high standard for academic achievement. As Math Department Chair, he plays a key role in shaping curriculum, supporting fellow teachers, and raising expectations for all math students. He maintained an active partnership with William Schmidt with the Michigan State University math department, which helped bring additional resources and enrichment opportunities to his students. He is one of the most popular teachers in the building, and his classes consistently fill up with a waiting list of students hoping to get in. Jeff is deeply committed to supporting students in every way possible. He volunteers hundreds of hours each year with the East Lansing Basketball Club, an organization that provides over $30,000 annually to benefit the community. These funds support youth sports, high school athletic teams, foreign language trips, the East Lansing Public Library, and many other local causes. His dedication to giving back shows his belief in building a strong and supportive environment for all students and families. Mr. Burgess brings an energy to school that is impossible to miss. You can hear him teaching from down the hall, and students describe his classes as exciting and full of life. Each day is like a rollercoaster in the best possible way, filled with enthusiasm, laughter, and learning. His passion for teaching motivates students to be present, involved, and ready to learn. His positivity spreads to colleagues as well, inspiring those around him to bring their best every day. The results of Mr. Burgess’s work speak for themselves. Students in his classes show strong growth in understanding, confidence, and performance. The success of his AP Stats course is just one example of how his teaching methods make a real difference. Through his continued learning and university partnerships, he brings rigor and relevance to his instruction. He helps students think critically, communicate clearly, and believe in their own ability to succeed. The daily AP experiences are a ton of fun.”

Burgess earned a bachelor’s degree from Albion College and a master’s degree from Missouri State University. He has been an educator for 19 years, all of them in his current position.
