If a player wins the $1.7 billion jackpot Wednesday night, it would be the second time a Powerball jackpot has been won on Christmas Eve. The last time Powerball had a jackpot winner on Christmas Eve was in 2011, when one ticket bought in Maryland won a $128.8 million jackpot.
Wednesday night’s jackpot ranks as the fourth largest-jackpot in Powerball and U.S. Lottery history. It will be the 47th drawing in the jackpot run, which is the longest stretch without a winner in the history of the Powerball game.
Since the Powerball jackpot run began Sept. 8, Michigan Lottery players have won more than $10.6 million in prizes, including four $1 million prizes. Those prizes were won:
- Dec. 10 – Online Purchase
- Dec. 13 – The Court Street Party Market, located in Cheboygan
- Dec. 20 – Mister A’s Party Shop, located in Grosse Pointe Farms
- Dec. 20 – Murphy USA Gas Station, located in Ludington
The Powerball jackpot was last won in Michigan on Jan. 1, 2024, by a Mid-Michigan lottery club. The club won a $842.4 million Powerball jackpot with a ticket purchased in Grand Blanc. That jackpot is the largest Powerball prize ever won in Michigan.
Retailers throughout the state are selling Powerball tickets until 9:58 p.m. Wednesday. Tickets also may be purchased online at MichiganLottery.com.
Powerball plays may be purchased for $2 each at Lottery retailers across the state and online at MichiganLottery.com. A “Power Play” option that multiplies non-jackpot prizes by up to 10 times to a maximum of $2 million may be added to any Powerball play for only $1. For an additional $1 per play, Double Play may be added to a Powerball ticket, giving players a second chance to win up to $10 million in the nightly Double Play drawing.
The Powerball drawing takes place at 10:59 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday and may be watched live online at: http://www.powerball.com. Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington D.C., U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
