The 64-year old player from Plymouth said that Keno! is his favorite game. However, on July 28 when he went to play the Lottery, he told the clerk, “Just give me whatever is being drawn tonight.” Since it was Saturday, Powerball and Classic Lotto 47 would be drawn. The player bought a Classic Lotto 47 ticket for $1.
The next day, friends told the player, who wishes to remain anonymous, that the place where he bought his ticket had a winner. He got a Sunday paper so he could see the numbers for himself, and discovered that he was the lucky winner of $3,346,342!
When the winner told his girlfriend that he had won, she was sure it wasn’t true so she went to check the numbers on the computer. He also told some friends he had won, but they didn’t believe him either. “I’m kind of a jokester,” he said. “I’ve told people before that I won when I didn’t. Now they don’t believe me, but they will,” he said with a laugh.
The lucky player wants to use some of his winnings to give gifts to his siblings. Although, he doesn’t plan to buy a new house or car, he intends to take his friends out for a nice dinner and try to convince them that he is now a millionaire!
When asked by Lottery staff how he felt about winning more than $3 million, the player replied, “I’m a pretty low maintenance guy, so it’s a little surreal, especially since I only spent $1.”
The winning ticket was sold at Schulz’ Cap N’ Cork at 40644 Five Mile Rd. in Plymouth.
Over 95 cents of every dollar spent on Lottery tickets is returned to the state in the form of contributions to the state School Aid Fund, prizes to players and commissions to retailers. In fiscal year 2011, the contribution to schools was over $727.3 million. Since its inception in 1972, the Lottery has contributed over $16 billion to education in Michigan.
