Sterling Heights woman claims prize

LANSING, August 25, 2006 – A lucky 65-year-old woman claimed a $250,000 Mega Millions prize today.

Marcia Thomas matched all five white balls, without matching the Mega ball to win the prize.

The winner, who has been playing the Lottery since 1972, said she and her husband plan to invest their prize money for retirement.

The couple had the winning ticket for about a week before they knew it was a winner.  “We only check tickets once a week at the store,” the winner said.

Thomas purchased the winning own-pick ticket at Kroger #673, 2260 18 Mile Rd., in Sterling Heights.

Mega Millions is a multi-state lottery game in Michigan, California, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Washington.  Wagers cost $1 each and tickets may be purchased at more than 10,000 Michigan Lottery retailers statewide.

All proceeds from the Lottery are contributed to the state School Aid Fund which supports kindergarten through 12th grade public education in Michigan.  In fiscal year 2005, the contribution was $667.6 million.
