LANSING, January 19, 2000 — A Detroit woman started her new year off with a bang after learning she had matched all six winning numbers and was the sole winner of a $2.1 million Lotto jackpot!
The lucky woman, who requested anonymity, was the only Michigan Lottery player to match all six numbers in the January 5 Michigan Lotto drawing: 1, 2, 21, 30, 40 and 48. That day’s announced jackpot was $2.1 million. The winner selected annuity payment for her jackpot winnings, and collected her first installment check of $84,000 (before taxes) during her recent visit to Michigan Lottery headquarters in Lansing. That check will be followed by 24 annual installments.
"I don’t buy Lottery tickets very often — I only bought this one to celebrate the year 2000," the winner said. "I was just about ready to throw the ticket away when I decided to call my mother — an avid Lottery player — to see if she knew what the winning numbers were for that drawing. As she read them to me I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! I had to ask her for the numbers a couple of times to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. I then decided to take the ticket to the Lottery’s regional office in Detroit to have it checked one more time. I was so surprised because I never win anything!"
The Detroit woman said she has been playing Michigan Lottery games off and on for the last eight years, and she particularly enjoys the Daily 3 game, instant games and, of course, the Michigan Lotto.
The winning Michigan Lotto ticket was sold at Lobby Shoppe, 5057 Woodward Ave., in Detroit. Prior to turning the winning ticket in at Lottery headquarters, the winner said she kept it with her at all times to ensure its safety.
The lucky lady, who enjoys dancing and collecting elephant statues in her free time, said she plans to use part of her winnings to purchase a new car, but has not yet decided what to do with the rest of the money.
The Detroit woman is grateful for the prize she won and offered the following words of wisdom to other Lottery hopefuls: "Be mindful and prayerful, and don’t let money change you," she said. "I think this prize is truly a blessing!"
The winner became the 55th Detroit resident in Michigan Lottery history to win a Lotto jackpot prize. Combined, these lucky Detroit winners have collected over $176 million in Michigan Lotto jackpot prizes!
Michigan Lotto drawings are conducted every Wednesday and Saturday. The guaranteed jackpot for tonight’s (Wednesday) drawing is $2.4 million.
