LANSING, November 2, 1999 — The 13 members of a Romulus lottery club collected all treats and no tricks this Halloween, thanks to the prize they won in a Michigan Lotto drawing!
The club members held the sole ticket that matched all six numbers in the October 27 Michigan Lotto drawing: 2, 10, 11, 16, 20 and 24. That day’s announced annuitized jackpot was $4.8 million. The club, however, chose to receive its winnings in one lump-sum payment for $2,559,524, the present cash value of the jackpot before taxes.
“I watched the drawing on WDIV-TV 4,” the club representative said. “When I saw the numbers come up I was almost certain we had won. I watched for the numbers on the news again the next morning, and then finally decided to get a winning number report from the store to make sure we had really matched all six numbers. That is when I finally believed we had won! I was immediately excited, but paranoid too. I was really scared that I would misplace or lose the ticket.”
The club members, who requested anonymity, said they play both the Michigan Lotto and The Big Game as a club. They purchased the winning ticket at Golden Gallon Food Store, 37575 W. Huron River Drive, in Romulus. Prior to turning the winning ticket in to the Lottery, the club’s representative placed it in a safe.
The club members, all avid sportsmen who work together for the City of Romulus, said that some of the club members plan to save their winnings for retirement, while others are still thinking about what to do with their share. The lucky winners range in age from 21 to 62.
The faithful Lottery players offered the following words of wisdom to other Lottery hopefuls: “Hang in there and keep playing. You only need one ticket to win!”
These winners mark the sixth occurrence in Michigan Lottery history of a Romulus resident or club winning a Lotto jackpot prize. Combined, lucky Romulus winners have collected over $18.5 million in Michigan Lotto jackpot prizes!
Michigan Lotto drawings are conducted every Wednesday and Saturday. The estimated jackpot for Wednesday’s (November 3) drawing is $2.1 million.
