LANSING, January 29, 1999 – A Detroit man really cashed in when he won the $100,000 top prize in the Michigan Lottery’s Cash 5 game!
The 41-year-old winner, who requested anonymity, matched all five numbers – 9, 13, 16, 34 and 35 – in the January 21 drawing. The winning ticket was purchased at Luxor Liquor, 10425 W. McNichols, in Detroit.
"I saw the winning numbers on television but I didn’t catch all of them," the winner said. "When I got to work I looked up the winning numbers in the Detroit Free Press. When I saw them and realized I had matched all five I couldn’t believe it! I called the store where I bought the ticket and asked them for the winning numbers and I checked the numbers in the Detroit News too just to make sure! I was really nervous and excited about winning!"
The lucky man’s winning numbers have special significance to him as they are family members’ birthdays. He said he has been playing the same set of numbers since the day he began playing the Cash 5 game. Prior to collecting his prize at Michigan Lottery headquarters in Lansing, the Detroit man kept the winning ticket "with him at all times."
The automobile racing fan, who has been playing Michigan Lottery games for over 20 years, said he plans to use his winnings to pay off his mortgage. The winner offered the following advice to other Lottery hopefuls: "Stick with the same numbers — eventually they will come up!"
Cash 5 drawings are conducted every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Odds to win the $100,000 top prize are one in 575,757. Tickets are available at more than 6,400 Michigan Lottery retailers statewide.
