Niles Man Wins $100,000 In Cash 5 Drawing!

LANSING, December 16, 1998 – A Niles man recently "cashed in" when he won the $100,000 top prize in the Michigan Lottery’s Cash 5 game!

The 60-year-old winner, who requested anonymity, matched all five numbers — 9, 10, 16, 29 and 38 — in the December 2 drawing.  The winning Cash 5 ticket was purchased at Smiley’s Mobil, 2843 S. 11th St., in Niles.

"I saw the winning numbers in the South Bend Tribune," he said.  "I cried and got very emotional when I realized that I had won.  My wife passed away just eight short months ago, and I wish she could have been here to see this!"

After his wife passed away, the United Fixtures, Inc. employee began playing a specific set of numbers on Cash 5 — the year he was born, his wife’s birth date, and his grandson’s birth date.

Prior to collecting his prize at Lottery headquarters in Lansing, the winner kept the winning ticket in a lock box at his bank.  The avid fisherman said he plans to use his winnings to pay bills and do some traveling throughout the United States.

Cash 5 drawings are conducted every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  Odds to win the $100,000 prize are one in 575,757.  Tickets are available at more than 6,400 Michigan Lottery retailers statewide.
